Charlie.
The white corridors of Heaven passed by in a blur as Dan stormed the hallways, narrowly avoiding other angels walking past us. I didn’t have time to stop and take in where I was: Heaven, The Mother World, a place only angels ever got to see.
Bik, too, was looking around as his chest heaved with the effort to keep up with Dan. Dan was almost running now, and I considered picking the tiny fairy beside me up and carrying him to save his short legs. The thought caused laughter to rise in my throat, which seemed inappropriate given the situation. Yet I couldn’t help feeling a little giddy.
“It’s a Heaven thing,” Dan called from ahead, as if hearing my thoughts. “Visitors here feel nothing but positive emotions. But that’ll wear off once we reach his office, so don’t get too comfortable.”
“Who’s office?” I asked. Beside me, Barry translated to Bik from the palm of Bik’s hand.
“God’s.”
Bik stopped walking. Barry rolled his eyes. “God? Why?”
“Because I’ve had enough.”
Dan continued his stomping, and Bik and I hurried after him, Bik’s brow furrowed as he called, “Dan, wait, we can’t just walk in on God!”
But Dan wasn’t listening, he was already half way down the hallway, other angels frowning at him as he rushed on. Bik sighed, but made no attempt to slow down as we followed until a door came into view at the corridor’s end.
“You don’t think…” Bik began.
“That that’s God’s office?” I replied, eyes on the large white door, Dan’s red hair a beacon among the colourless halls. “I don’t think I deserve to be meeting God.”
Dan had reached the door and was waiting by a speaker in the wall. As we reached him, there was a beep and a loud click. Dan was tapping his foot restlessly, but once the click rang out he shouldered the door open and stormed in.
I hesitated as the door began to slowly close, Bik by my side.
“Should we follow him?” Bik asked.
I swallowed. “I think so, if only to stop him from whatever he’s about to do.”
Bik nodded, then headed through the door. I followed.
God’s office was a large, white space like everything else I had seen in Heaven, screens covering every wall. I recognised some famous landmarks from High World on them. There was a leather chair in the centre of the room, and on it sat a middle-aged man with scraggy brown hair and a noticeable beer belly.
“What can I do for you?” the man asked, taking a swig from the bottle in his hand. He didn’t bother looking up as Dan walked towards him, slower than in the corridor but with tension lacing his posture. Bik and I kept our backs to the wall near the exit. Did God even know we were in the room?
“We need to talk,” Dan said, stopping before the chair.
God took another gulp from his bottle, belched, then set the bottle down. “Why?”
“Because I’m tired.” Dan’s whole body was taught, his shoulders tense and hands balled into fists.
